La'Toya Latney - Chair

La’Toya Latney serves as the full-time, senior clinician in the Avian & Exotics Department at The Animal Medical Center, the world’s largest and oldest non-profit specialty hospital. She transitioned to AMC 4 years ago after serving as Service Head and Asst Professor of Clinical Zoo and Exotic Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Dr. Latney is a board-certified Reptile & Amphibian specialist, certified in Aquatic Veterinary medicine and is a Diplomat in the European College of Zoological Medicine (Zoo Health Management). Dr. Latney tackles patient care using an integrated evidence-based approach for all species. She has a contagious enthusiasm for celebrating the physiology, anatomy, and medicine of exotic and zoo animals. Her special interests include reptile infectious diseases, comparative critical care and adapted emergency response for exotics, innovative surgical techniques for all species, reptile husbandry and nutrition.

James Bogan

Dr. Bogan received his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine and a Master of Veterinary Studies in Conservation Medicine through Murdoch University.  He is also board certified in canine and feline practice as well as in reptile and amphibian practice through the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners.  Dr. Bogan was also certified as an aquatic veterinarian through the World Aquatic Veterinary Association.  Currently, he is the owner operator of a mobile practice, The Critter Fixer of Central Florida, the Director of the Orianne Center for Indigo Conservation, and the Chief Veterinary Officer for Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens.  Additionally, Dr. Bogan is the scientific editor for Journal of Herpetological Medicine and Surgery and is currently serving on the Executive Board for the Association of Reptile and Amphibian Veterinarians.

Nicola Di Girolamo

Dr. Nicola Di Girolamo is an associate professor of Exotic Pet Medicine at Cornell University. Before moving to the United States, Nicola was employed as a veterinary specialist in Hong Kong and as a resident in Rome, Italy. He completed a PhD at the University of Bologna and a master of science in evidence-based healthcare at the University of Oxford. He is currently the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Small Animal Practice and of the Journal of Exotic Pet Medicine. Nicola is board-certified from the American College of Zoological Medicine, the European College of Zoological Medicine and the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine.

Paul Gibbons

Paul Gibbons earned his DVM at University of Illinois and completed an exotics residency and Master’s Degree at University of California-Davis. He has worked in mixed animal practice, specialty exotics practice, in the field with the US Geological Survey and Fish & Wildlife Service, as Chief Operating Officer of the Turtle Conservancy, and he currently owns and operates a mobile veterinary clinic. He is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Herpetological Medicine and Surgery, is a founding and current Diplomate of the ABVP Reptile and Amphibian Practice specialty, and was certified in Avian Practice from 2002 to 2012. He is a Past-President of the Association of Reptilian and Amphibian Veterinarians and serves on the Conservation Planning Specialist Group and the Tortoise and Freshwater Turtle Specialist Group of the IUCN. In 2009, Paul was selected for the “Exotic DVM of the Year” award.

Rachel E. Marschang

Rachel E. Marschang

Rachel Marschang qualified as a veterinarian from the Justus Liebig University in Giessen, Germany in 1995 and has been working in reptile medicine and infectious diseases ever since. She received her doctorate in viruses of tortoises from the Justus Liebig University and her habilitation in Environmental and Animal Hygiene and Veterinary Virology from the University of Hohenheim in Stuttgart, Germany. She is a diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Microbiology (ECVM) and of the European College of Zoological Medicine (ECZM) in herpetological medicine. She is a past president of The Association of Reptilian and Amphibian Veterinarians (ARAV) and of the ECZM. She is currently working as a consultant veterinarian for reptile diagnostics at Laboklin GmbH & Co. KG in Bad Kissingen, Germany and as an adjunct professor (Privatdozentin) at the University of Hohenheim in Stuttgart, Germany. She is also the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Herpetological Medicine and Surgery.

Karina Mathes

Dr. Karina Mathes studied Veterinary Medicine at the University of Munich, Germany and did her doctoral thesis on mycoplasma and herpesviruses in free-ranging and captive Mediterranean tortoises in France and Morocco at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Giessen, Germany. Dr. Mathes achieved her habilitation in 2019 at the Veterinary University in Hannover on Imaging diagnostics in reptiles (“Presentation of the Specific Anatomy and Morphology of Various Organ Systems Using Current Imaging Techniques; Digital Radiography, Sonography, Endoscopy, Computed Tomography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging”). She was the head of the Department of Reptiles and Amphibians at the Clinic for Pets, Reptiles, Pet and Feral Birds of the Veterinary University Hannover, Germany for over ten years, and teaches as an adjunct professor at the University of Veterinary in Hannover. She is a diplomate of the European College of Zoological Medicine (herpetology) and certified specialist for reptiles and amphibians in Germany.

Colin McDermott

Colin McDermott

Colin McDermott is currently the Clinical Assistant Professor of Avian and Exotic Medicine at the City University of Hong Kong. He earned his veterinary degree from the University of Pennsylvania, and obtained additional training in exotic animal medicine through 2 years of internship at the University of Pennsylvania and a fellowship at the National Aquarium in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. He has previously worked in private practice in New Jersey, USA and Hong Kong SAR. He is a certified Aquatic Veterinarian through the World Aquatic Veterinary Medical Association and a Diplomate of the American Board of Reptile and Amphibian Practice.

Frank Pasmans - LOC

Frank Pasmans

Frank Pasmans has a life-long passion for amphibians and reptiles. He is a veterinarian and professor in veterinary bacteriology and mycology and in reptile and amphibian diseases at Ghent University, Belgium. Together with An Martel, he is in charge of Wildlife Health Ghent, a research group with focus on infections that affect wildlife populations. Research on reptile and amphibian diseases focuses on developing mitigation in nature, based on a thorough understanding of the fundamental processes of host-pathogen-environment interactions. Main topics are chytridiomycosis in amphibians and skin infections in reptiles.
